Aside from a license, your real estate agent should possess other qualities that will guarantee your success as a buyer or seller.

Real estate agents all look the same, don’t they? I mean, if you open a real estate guide, or take a look at ads, flyers, postcards, etc., you’ll usually see our smiling faces donned in our best professional threads. On the surface, it might not be so easy to figure out which agent to choose to represent your real estate interests.

Hiring a real estate agent to help you buy or sell a home is not unlike hiring someone for a job. Imagine yourself as the CEO of a company, and you’re hiring someone to help your company reach its goals. What questions would you ask? What qualifications would you be looking for? This approach can be used in the same way to hire a Realtor to represent your interest. Here are some questions to consider.

How long have you been licensed?

Experience goes a long way in helping you reach your real estate goals. However, just because an agent has been licensed for several years does not necessarily equal long term experience. Some agents take time off from the business, but keep their license active. Even still, this opens a dialogue for you to determine their level of commitment to your needs.

Have you sold any homes?

It might be obvious that a licensed agent has sold homes, but you’d be surprised. There are agents who have held their license for quite some time, but have not sold a single home.

Are you a member of the National Association of Realtors?

This is very important. Obtaining a real estate license does not automatically mean the licensee is a Realtor. The Realtor designation ONLY comes from being a member of the National Association of Realtors (And their local subsidiaries such as California Association of Realtors and our local board, Southland Regional Association of Realtors). The Realtor designation provides the agent with more tools and accountability to perform their job in the most professional manner possible. Agents who are not Realtors do not have access to the multiple listing service, which can affect their ability to market your listing, or find you the perfect home to purchase.

What will you do to sell my home for top dollar?

A good agent will arrive for your listing appointment prepared with a written marketing plan to demonstrate their methods of selling  your home fast, and for top dollar.
