Outback Steakhouse opened in Stevenson Ranch Plaza on Tuesday, March 4, 1997. It was the 10th Outback in the Los Angeles area. The night before it opened, a launch event raised $5,000 for the SCV Boys & Girls Club, as KHTS reported. Its last day of business is expected this Sunday, Oct. 25.
The business with the clearest plans for this stretch of The Old Road is Raising Cane's, a drive-thru chicken chain. Its target opening is fall 2027, about 30 years after Outback first opened. Read alongside what has been filed for the empty spaces, the fall closures show a pattern. The strip is trading sit-down dining rooms and a big-box gym for drive-thrus, boutique studios and a proposed indoor family entertainment center.
Four Months, Five Last Days
The closures cover the stretch of The Old Road from Stevenson Ranch Plaza north into the Valencia side of the road, plus one address just off it on Pico Canyon Road.
| Business | Location | Last day |
|---|---|---|
| Ananto Sushi | Valencia Marketplace, 25700 block of The Old Road | Sept. 12 |
| Red Lobster | 27500 block of The Old Road | Sunday, Sept. 20 |
| Starbucks | 25164 The Old Road | Late September |
| Outback Steakhouse | Stevenson Ranch Plaza, 26200 block of The Old Road | Expected Oct. 25 |
| LA Fitness | 24945 Pico Canyon Road | Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. |
The Starbucks sat just across the parking lot from Outback, so Stevenson Ranch Plaza will have lost two of its familiar names within about a month.
The Reasons Point Above Stevenson Ranch
Most of the reasons on record for these closures come from corporate strategy, not from anything about this location.
KHTS reported that the Starbucks closure was part of the chain's plan to close 250 North American stores it had identified as "underperforming." Red Lobster's lease was not renewed, and the chain has kept shrinking its restaurant count nationwide.
The LA Fitness closing came with no stated reason. In its report on the closure, KHTS noted that parent company Fitness International LLC has confirmed several LA Fitness closures across the U.S. in 2025 and 2026 as it shifts toward its upscale Club Studio brand.
The closures also share a physical trait, and that trait is size. Red Lobster occupied a roughly 8,173-square-foot restaurant. A full-size gym and a full-service steakhouse are among the largest-format tenants a suburban center carries. These are the rooms emptying out this fall.
What's Already Filed for the Empty Spaces
Filings with Los Angeles County at three of these addresses hint at what comes next. Each site is at a different stage, and none of the businesses is open yet.
The former Red Lobster, 27500 block of The Old Road. KHTS reported that Raising Cane's filed a construction permit on June 22, 2026, for a drive-thru restaurant with an attached outdoor patio. A demolition permit followed on Sept. 8. It covers tearing down the existing building and surrounding landscaping "to prepare the site for a new Raising Cane's restaurant." A company representative told KHTS the location is slated to open in fall 2027.
The former Bed Bath & Beyond, 25540 The Old Road. A planning application filed May 31, 2026, proposes an indoor family recreation and entertainment facility for the long-vacant store. The county's weekly filing log lists family-oriented attractions, birthday and event rooms, a café and food service area, and an arcade. The application asks the county to decide which entitlements and permits the use would need. It is a proposal at the earliest stage, and no operator is named in the log.
24945 Pico Canyon Road, the LA Fitness address. The same county log shows a June 5, 2026, filing at this address for three sets of internally halo-illuminated channel letters and one set of non-illuminated letters. That is new signage, filed months before the gym announced its December closing. The entry does not name a business.
KHTS has not reported a successor for the Outback or Starbucks spaces.
The Strip Already Leans Smaller
The businesses still open around Pico Canyon Road and The Old Road show the same direction the filings do.
The newest arrival is San Fernando Coffee Co. at 24921 Pico Canyon Road. The SCV Chamber listed its grand opening and ribbon cutting for Aug. 7, 2026, and described it as the company's third Santa Clarita Valley location. Its online menu goes past espresso to handhelds and breakfast burritos, signature iced drinks, crepes and waffles. The Stevenson Ranch shop takes pickup and delivery orders through its own site. For anyone who relied on the Starbucks at 25164 The Old Road, it is the nearest independent coffee option covered here.
Fitness on this stretch already runs through studios. YogaSix Stevenson Ranch at 25922 The Old Road shows a full class schedule through the week of Oct. 18. Club Pilates Stevenson Ranch at 25832 The Old Road has bookable classes starting Monday, Oct. 19. Both studios run on scheduled, bookable classes.
Sit-down dining has not left the area either. A few options stay open:
- Finney's Crafthouse, 25636 The Old Road, has patio dining. It is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
- Casa Canela, 24930 Pico Canyon Road, takes reservations and posts daily hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- IHOP, 24737 Pico Canyon Road, lists 24-hour dine-in service every day.
Finney's and Casa Canela cover the birthday-dinner and date-night role that KHTS said Outback filled for generations of local diners.
Before Dec. 8, If Your Home Club Is Stevenson Ranch
LA Fitness members have the longest runway of anyone affected. KHTS reported their options from the club's own announcement:
- Keep training at another club. Members whose home club is Stevenson Ranch will get access to all LA Fitness locations nationwide, including Signature clubs. The two Santa Clarita locations expected to stay open are on Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia and on Golden Valley Road.
- Cancel without penalty. You can cancel in person at any club during its hours. You can also cancel by mail to PO Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619-4170, with your member barcode, email address, or name and phone number. A third option is online, through your account on the LA Fitness website under "Cancel Membership."
Membership agreements vary, so confirm the terms of your own contract directly with the club before choosing.
The Year Between Last Call and First Order
The gap is the part of this turnover that will be most noticeable day to day. The Red Lobster closed on Sept. 20. The Raising Cane's that replaces it is targeting fall 2027, so the 27500 block will spend about a year moving through demolition and construction. The Bed Bath & Beyond space has been empty long enough that its own planning application calls the project a way to "revitalize a long-vacant commercial tenant space." The family entertainment proposal is still waiting for the county to say which approvals it needs.
The near-term calendar is set. Outback's last day is expected this Sunday, Oct. 25. LA Fitness closes at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8. After that, the next confirmed date on this stretch is a Raising Cane's opening that is still about a year away.
